Compensation claims threaten whole system
May 2025
Read MoreThe business community is again calling on NSW Parliament to enact workers’ compensation reform before Christmas.
Following a marathon debate in the Upper House overnight, parliamentarians have not been able to agree on essential reforms for the 320,000 businesses that pay workers’ compensation premiums and million-plus people who depend on those businesses for their livelihood.
Business NSW CEO Daniel Hunter said the business community is sweating on reforms getting through before the summer break.
“Businesses cannot go into Christmas with the threat of a 36 per cent increase in workers’ compensation premiums hanging over their heads,” Mr Hunter said.
“On the behalf of the 50,000 NSW businesses we represent – many of them small family businesses – we are again calling on parliamentarians to reform the system within the next seven days before parliament closes for the year.
“This scheme is fast becoming the most expensive in the country. NSW must be the best place to start and run a business, not the most expensive.
“Next week presents a unique opportunity to pass these reforms. Our members tell us a 36 per cent increase would force them to cut jobs, scale back operations and put expansion plans on hold.
“One in five said they would be forced to shut. Let’s back business this Christmas.”
