PROMISE OF NO NEW TAXES WILL GIVE SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS A BREAK

A pledge by the NSW Coalition to ensure no new taxes on small businesses has been welcomed by the state’s peak business group.

Business NSW says the promise by Premier Dominic Perrottet to not introduce new taxes over the next four years will help businesses get on with employing people and serving their communities.

Business NSW CEO Dan Hunter said Mr Perrottet’s election promise gives businesses certainty.

“A promise to not introduce new taxes for small businesses over the next four years has the support of Business NSW and our almost 50,000 members,” Mr Hunter said.

“Business owners have been calling on the government to give them a break amid interest rate rises, energy price surges, spiralling rents and supply chain disruptions.

“The Coalition’s promise goes a long way to easing the burden on business.

“It also paves the way for consideration of broader taxation reform, including a reduction in payroll tax.”

Mr Hunter also welcomed Treasurer Matt Kean’s pledge for eligible small business operators to be able to claim up to an additional $750 in rebates once they’ve spent $375 in a year on a business road toll account.

Under the plan, sole traders can backdate claims to 1 July 2022 and claim 40 per cent of what they’ve spent, up to $750 a year.

As part of the We Mean Business election campaign, Business NSW is calling on both sides of government to ensure there is no increase in the overall tax burden on business.

“The pressure is now on Labor leader Chris Minns to make the same promise as Premier Dominic Perrottet to not introduce new taxes on small businesses,” Mr Hunter said.

“There is no doubt businesses need help in surviving cost pressures.”
