Fuel supply impact on NSW businesses

Overview

Businesses across New South Wales are facing widespread disruption due to fuel shortages and rising costs, according to a recent Business NSW survey of 644 businesses conducted between 31 March and 13 April 2026.

This survey and these results are the state-specific findings of a national survey conducted by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and state chambers of commerce in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, SA and WA.

The findings highlight the significant operational and financial pressures caused by the fuel supply crisis, with impacts felt across all industries and most businesses reporting cost increases, supply chain challenges and workforce effects.

Key Findings

  • 84% of businesses have been impacted by fuel shortages.
  • 47% have experienced fuel shortages for more than two weeks.
  • 74% of businesses have experienced a moderate to severe direct impact from the fuel crisis.
  • 98% of businesses have seen an increase in fuel costs. 88% have reported an increase in supplier costs and in freight and logistics costs.
  • Only 4% have taken no action in response to higher costs. Most businesses have been absorbing costs through lower margins (72%), reducing nonessential spending (63%) and reviewing staffing levels and hours (47%).
  • 88% of businesses reported the fuel crisis is having an impact on their staff.
