The Northern Rivers Regional Business Awards recognises and celebrates business excellence. The Northern Rivers has a diverse regional economy with strong industries such as tourism, health, manufacturing and education.

2021 Winner

Serendip Plantation

Serendip Plantation was established in 1989 to grow organic macadamia nuts on the Alstonville Plateau in a region where the macadamia nut grew in its native natural habitat. Serendip Plantation is the only macadamia farm in Australia with international certification accredited to the National Organic Program/United States Department of Agriculture. When an already desirable food product has organic certification at the highest international level, it becomes a highly desirable Australian product. Add to this a family farm, single origin on red kraznozem soils in the caldera of the extinct Mount Warning volcano, and this macadamia farm becomes truly unique.

Potager

Potager - A Kitchen Garden, Tweeds award winning dining destination sits on a small 10-acre farm in Carool’s picturesque countryside - a culinary destination popular with locals and visitors alike.

While guests come to taste sumptuous cuisine, they are spoiled with a panorama across a nourishing Northern NSW valley with views to the ocean, from inside a contemporary fit out, in the stylish décor of local craftspeople. As much as possible is grown on the farm and sourced from the surrounding region.

Wild Honey Creative

Wild Honey Creative is a full-service creative studio based in Kyogle, that specialises in branding, website design, and publication design.

The team offer creative and strategic marketing to local, national and international clients with an emphasis on working with ethical, sustainable, and community-minded small to medium businesses and government and community organisations that are passionate about making a positive impact. Wild Honey Creative also partners with local councils to produce destination marketing such as the Kyogle Culture Magazine, and the Richmond Valley Visitors Guide.

They hold themselves to the values of authenticity, creativity, community, and connection in business.

This category is to acknowledge enterprises for excellence in the provision of high quality care and customer service within the healthcare and wellness industries.

AirPhysio

AirPhysio is short for Airway Physiotherapy, and the company started in 2016 with a dream of helping people with respiratory conditions like Asthma, Bronchiectasis, COPD and Cystic Fibrosis. They understood that many people suffer from these conditions and natural therapy devices, although available, were relatively unknown and outdated. They developed a new and improved version of the current devices in the market. AirPhysio is also a mucus clearance and respiratory physiotherapy device that is great for athletes and physically active individuals, as it increases lung capacity, reduces breathlessness during exercise, increases exercise tolerance, and speeds up recovery times.

The Outstanding Employee award recognises an inspirational employee who has demonstrated a passion for their role and a commitment to their workplace and community.

Angela Bontea, CASPA Services

Angela has over 15 years’ experience in Out of Home Care, she began her career on the frontline working with vulnerable children and young people in foster care and is now the Executive Director General Programs at CASPA Services.

During COVID Angela was approached by the Department of Communities and Justice for her team to complete an emergency assessment on Grandparents to provide care to their grandchildren. Recognising the importance of children remaining with family, CASPA was able to respond swiftly and complete the assessment, so the children did not have to reside with carers unknown to them. CASPA were informed that other providers had given timeframes of 3-6months to complete this assessment process, Angela made this a priority and her team had it finalized in a couple of days, whilst maintaining quality, fidelity and adherence to all OCG guidelines and legislation, this ensures that children can remain with family if they aren’t able to stay with their parents.

The Outstanding Young Business Leader award recognises an inspirational business leader aged 35 or under who demonstrates outstanding entrepreneurial spirit, strategic business direction and innovative ideas.

Levi Loughlin, Herne's Security 

As Director at Herne's Security, Levi is responsible for the company's strategic and organizational management; including client liaison, negotiating contracts, management of staff, and identifying growth opportunities specifically in technology and innovation.

It has been a priority in the past twelve months to extend the scope of their contracts beyond hospitality and event-related clients. By diversifying their client base into other industries such as Federal and State Government organisations and their offerings into Security Patrol Vehicles, CCTV/Alarm Installation and Servicing, Cash-In-Transit and Alarm Monitoring, they have minimised the risk to their business should clients or industries change and ensure job security for their workforce.

Frontier Pets manufacturers pet food and treats using 100% high-welfare ingredients, sourced directly from Australian farmers and growers. 

Diana is the Founder and CEO of Frontier Pets and undertakes all strategic activity for the company, develop and organise joint ventures with external partners and develop high-level marketing strategies with the Marketing Manager. Through creative and innovative thinking Frontier Pets have entered into a number of Joint Venture arrangements with external suppliers and influencers to meet with their growing demands and without putting undo strain on their existing resources.

Norco Co-operative

Norco is a 100% Australian farmer owned dairy co-operative with 290 active members supplying milk from 199 farms. Norco's member supply region is from Gympie QLD in the north down to the Upper Hunter region of NSW with annual milk intake of approx 226m litres. Norco is primarily a dairy manufacturer with interests also in rural retailing, stockfeed manufacture and grain trading with a total workforce across all sites of 840. The Norco Foods division consists of two milk factories (located at Labrador in QLD and Raleigh in NSW) and an Ice Cream Business Unit (located at Lismore NSW).

Santos Organics a little shop with a big heart and believe that to care for ourselves is just as important as caring for Mother Earth.

Friends of the Koala

Operating for over 35 years, Friends of the Koala have an established history of working towards positive outcomes for koalas in the region. They are licensed through NSW NPWS to rescue, rehabilitate, and release sick & injured koalas. They operate the only specialised Koala Hospital in the region which is licensed through the veterinary board of NSW. On average, tend to 350 koalas per year, which is approximately a third of all wild koalas rescued in NSW.  They are committed to conserving koalas and preserving and enhancing their habitat across the region.

The Myrtle Trading Co

The Myrtle Trading Co ('MyrtleCo') is a start-up business wholly located within Northern Rivers NSW. They work with local farmers to grow, process and market Australian native botanicals (e.g. Lemon Myrtle) to both domestic and international customers.

Entirely organic, based exclusively on regenerative agricultural principles, and leveraging modern manufacturing technologies MyrtleCo has established a new standard in production of Australian native botanicals. In less than 24 months MyrtleCo’s flagship product – Organic Lemon Myrtle Leaf – is recognised by buyers as ‘Australia’s finest’ and can be found in a growing number of products throughout Australia and Europe.

Grafton Chamber of Commerce

The Grafton Chamber of Commerce is committed to not only support our Chamber member’s interests but also actively works to encourage business and economic growth in our region. The Chamber has a strong history of support and advocacy for local business and has played a dynamic role in fostering economic growth in our local area.
