This dynamic little village is bursting at the seams with its own special brand of can-do

Pambula flourishes on a magical blend of pioneer history, the universal appeal of world-class coastal destinations and the welcome of proud locals. The town shares the land, sea and waterways with its traditional owners - the Yuin People.Tourism is the life-blood of Pambula and a spotlight focusses brightly on the pristine waterways of nearby Pambula Beach, Lion’s Beach and Pambula River-mouth, eternal favourites with holidaymakers and residents. This coastline is well deserving of Tourism Australia’s award ‘Australia’s Coastal Wilderness’ - lauding the region’s purity and proliferation of marine life.

There are so many ways to enjoy this sublime destination including camping, surfing, SUPing, kayaking, fishing, bushwalking, biking, golfing or taking a tour to spot whales, experience game-fishing or sample oysters (amongst the most sought after in Australia).Pambula is one of those pretty towns where newer buildings are designed to blend with their rustic neighbours. 180 years ago Pambula nestled on the flat at the bottom of the main street, where the picturesque Panboola Wetlands now offer a bird sanctuary and popular recreation area.

After braving one too many flooded winters, early settlers simply dragged their homes and businesses further up the hill where many still perch today.Historically significant shopfronts in Pambula date back as far as the 1830’s, and records show after a short gold rush in the 1880’s the town ran a busy hospital, school, church and bank. All still burgeoning today, as well as a high school, community aquatic centre and thriving surf lifesaving club. With over one hundred businesses it’s surprising not to see any familiar chain stores. This franchise-free look is remarkably refreshing.

There’s a broad range of shopping options including clothing, hair and beauty, eateries, furniture, galleries, wholefoods or hardware - diversity is the recipe for success. The breadth of industries on offer in Pambula allows an entire home to be built using local businesses! Pambula is also host to a variety of markets held on a monthly basis with a strong emphasis on local produce and homemade crafts. The village is also passionate about reducing its carbon footprint and works collaboratively with local organisations to eliminate single-use plastic.

Collaborations through the local Business Chamber, Bendigo Bank and Pambula Rotary have led to many achievements including bushfire recovery events, melanoma awareness, Cancer Council fundraisers, street beautification and increased disabled access.

Part of Pambula’s success lies in its ability to move with the times. In a progressive effort to support and promote tourism, Pambula Business Chamber has created and aired three television commercials and recently secured a $25,000 grant to display the works of its many well-known artists on the town’s walls. This mural project is in full swing and will increase with further investment, enhancing the town’s tourism potential and civic pride.A visit to Pambula confirms that this place is a magnetic blend of paradise and history, fuelled by the spirited energy of a proud community.
